Hair care conventional

Conventional shampoos and conditioners make for an international crowd. They are made in the UK, France, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and South East Asia. Speak to your hairdresser about which (if any) of the salon brands are made in South Africa.

Among the conventional products sold in shops, the following are made in South Africa, although not necessarily by South African companies:

L’Oreal El Vital, Organics and the 500ml bottles from TresEmme. Weirdly enough the small-sized TresEmme bottles are imported from the UK.

Revlon products are made locally and so are Black Chic, Dark & Lovely, Restore Plus and Easy Waves.

All the Pantene, Wella, Dove, Head & Shoulders and Sunsilk hair care products are imported. And so are African Pride (the irony...), Biosilk, all the Clicks’ own label hair products, Body on Tap, Dr Miracles, Gliss and Organic Olive Oil.

Hair care natural & organic

On the organic front (or ‘fringe’, to stay in follicular speak) you have a good choice of locally produced hair care products:

The Victorian Garden and African Organics make great shampoos and conditioners. I especially like The Victorian Garden’s African Indigenous Collection and the African Organics' products.

There is Enchantrix, which also makes a hair gel, Pure Beginnings and the Bloublommetjieskloof range to match all tastes.

The Earth Sap shampoos you might even be able to find at the supermarket.

For an ayurvedic oil mask for your hair you could try a local olive oil.

If you choose to iron your frizzy, curly or crinkly hair, the Veaudry styler is designed in South Africa but manufactured overseas.
